Canada Speeds Up Immigration Process for Foreign Tech Workers

On the 14th of June, 2016, the Canadian government launched a new innovation which promises to expedite immigration processes for foreign skilled workers that have secured job offers from rapidly growing tech companies. Although there is really no concrete details about this new innovation strategy, one thing that has been in the pipeline for a while among the ministers is to reduce the wait times for foreign workers to obtain their visas.

Presently, a typical visa application for a foreign skilled worker has a processing time of about 6 months minimum and this is really not so good for a fast paced world of technology. Tech employers are complaining that the government is causing delays by slowing down the process of recruiting top candidates from outside Canada, and these delays are hindering the growth of their firms.

The basic reason given by the government for these delays is the requirements under the Express Entry immigration system which requires that employers obtain a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before a foreign worker can be hired. Before an LMIA can be received, an employer must be able to prove to, beyond reasonable doubts, that there was no Canadian found with the kind of skills, qualifications and experience needed for the position for which an expatriate will be hired. The LMIA is the government’s tool to fight employers who deliberately hire low-paid and low skilled expatriates over qualified Canadians.

The Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, John McCallum has however promised that the government will keep working hard to try and accommodate the needs of the tech companies as much as possible.
